The Best Recipe for Black Beans
We made these beans the other night and well, I could pretty much eat these seasoned black beans for all eternity. If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, well then you know there are like 482 recipes here on for beans.
Okay, so maybe not that many. 😉 But there are a lot. Beans are cheap, they fill you up and they seem to be a staple item in most households.
In recent years I’ve posted recipes for Drunken Beans, Saturday Night Beans, Creamy Spiced Red Beans and Lentils, Slow Cooked Baked Beans, Baked Beans from Scratch, and the list goes on… But now I have another recipe for you to try, it’s a super simple recipe for black beans and let me tell you Bob, they are delicious.
We enjoyed this recipe so much, we plan on making them again this week.
This recipe, it’s a keeper. A 5 out of 5 if you ask me.

Ingredients
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/3 cup chopped onions
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 {16} ounce can black beans {do not drain}
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
1 teaspoon ground cumin
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup chopped tomatoes
2-4 tablespoons sour cream
Instructions
In a medium sized saucepan, saute the onions and garlic together with 1 teaspoon of olive oil until softened {about 2-3 minutes}. Add the black beans {liquid and all} along with the cilantro, cumin, and salt. Stir well.
Simmer beans on medium low uncovered for about 15 minutes, making sure to stir the beans occasionally.
Pour beans over 1 cup of cooked rice and garnish with a few chopped tomatoes, sour cream and fresh cilantro and you’ve got a main dish dinner for 2.

Can you use dried, cooked black beans? I prefer them to canned? Unless they’re home canned. This sounds yummy. And good for a veggie meal.
Amy says
Wondering the same thing!
Jen says
Yes and personally I think it tastes better with dried instead of canned. Alternatively, rinse and drain canned beans to help them taste better. You can also add a finely diced jalapeno or other chile to kick it up a notch, or top with salsa.
Mrs Mac says
Yum – I have everything to make this!
Deb says
Thanks for the recipe. I’m going to make these tonight.
Christie says
Yum! I am definitely making this soon!
Linda Practical Parsimony says
The best bean recipe i ever got from you, Mavis, was the taco casserole. When i make it in the crockpot, it is more like taco soup but DELICIOUS!
Cindy Brick says
(Thank you for having the courage to use the Goya can…)
I am not a big fan of black beans (they can make everything look like muddy gravel), but this dish looks so wonderful that I will try it!
CJ says
Mavis, I can only imagine you showed the Goya brand on purpose, a real kick in the gut to this long-time reader. You’re usually nonpartisan, but not this week.
Susan S says
Totally agree! I’m disappointed.
Rita says
Good grief!

FFS

Seriously???
Shari Harniss says
We shouldn’t assume people’s motives. Especially people we don’t know in our daily lives. Why would you want to assume something bad? Isn’t it better to let someone tell you themselves? Believe me, they always will.
I would think doing otherwise, would be exhausting.
Have a nice day!
Wendy says
Same here. Long time reader and very sad that this was intentionally placed the way it was.We are surrounded by politics these days and I could always count on this blog to be a nice reprieve and safe place to getaway.
Rita says
FFS indeed. You are free to leave. Bye bye.
Donna says
It’s a can of Ibeans for Gods sakes. Grow up and stop this insanity. If a can of beans triggers you, seek help
Ruth says
Loved to see the Goya brand! We’re stocking up!
Angie says
Love your recipes, trying this tonight.
Jamie says
Goya! loL. Love it.
Robin says
These comments! If you have been reading Mavis’ blog for any time at all you know she is the most apolitical blogger in the blogsphere. Don’t fixate on the brand of beans just enjoy the recipe 🙂
Shari Harniss says
I agree. Well said, Robin!
Amie says
I understand the importance of stepping away from political arguments, especially on a blog that’s normally devoted to gardening, groceries, and other relaxing hobbies.
However, I suspect that if Mavis truly was as apolitical as you suggest, that she would not have posted a picture of a product that has been highly politicized in recent weeks. It looks like she’s sending a pretty clear message in posting a picture of a Goya product.
LoLo R. says
Good for her. Courage!! Kowtowing is exhausting.
CJ says
Her posting of Goya plus no response in the comments has alienated this reader – I’ll be stepping away from the blog and IG. Don’t want a gut-punch when a post comes in.
Rita says
CJ Seriously? Good grief! — Bye bye CJ

CJ: I would encourage you to rethink your decision of walking away. I engaged another blogger in a pi$$ing match a year ago, because I was there for the blog, not her politics which are just dripping through her site and which I found super annoying. Backfired on me. I felt like a jerk, and I missed the good content she always puts forth. So, even though I told her I wouldn’t be back, I have found myself stalking her site and just ignoring the content that I don’t like. We can all agree to disagree and move on — that’s the beauty of civil discourse. So, I look forward to seeing what good comments YOU put on this blog in the future, even if we can’t all agree. Yeah?
Erin says
Wow these comments are something. The whole your not on my team so your wrong mentality is heavy with some people. It’s sad when we disagree with someone that we will alienate them or throw that relationship away. Both sides need to humble themselves enough to listen and learn.
LoLo R. says
Use whatever brand of beans you like and enjoy a good recipe. : ) It is curious though, of course no one wants to feel gut-punched : ( and yet, people holding to traditional values have felt gut-punched almost daily for decades and still held their tongues because they believe that everyone has the right to their own opinions. Maybe their views and feelings have been beat up for so long that they’ve learned to live it. Always being polite and not making a big deal of it. Always trying to be kind. But when people of other ways of thinking are in the same situation…. Are they just unaware of what it’s been like…?
chickengrandma says
Come on ladies —-really ? This is about beans and some of you are going way overboard. Don’t be so quick to be offended. It’s about BEANS Mavis likes.
Samantha says
Holy cow! Have we become so politically sensitive in this country that we knock each other over a can of beans. Ridiculous! Thanks for posting what looks to be a yummy recipe, Mavis! Look forward to trying it out!!!
Michelle says
Good grief. It’s a can of beans. The intolerance of the supposedly tolerant is astounding.
Rita says
Definitely agree!
Lynda says
Yes, the intolerance of the tolerant is beyond astounding. And the hoopla on this wonderful blog is astounding as well. Rock on, Dear Mavis….
Tiffany E Leasure says
Black beans and rice is a regular dish in our house, but it would be nice to fancy it up a bit. I can’t wait to give this a try. Thanks!
Kimberly O'Donoghue says
For all the disagreements about Goya or no Goya which is the biggest problem in our world today! We have become a bunch of big brats refusing to get along with anyone who disagrees with us when and how did this become such a prevalent discourse and has caused such rifts in our country our families and amongst friends. My grandparents taught me to agree to disagree it makes the world a better place, certainly has made mine a better place.
If anyone cares I made this recipe and it was absolutely fantastic thank you Mavis for sharing this quick and delicious nutritious meal. Will absolutely make again.
