The weather in Maine has been AWESOME the past few days! Today the temps are supposed to be in the mid 70’s and that’s fine by me. The rest of the fence was installed yesterday. Yee-Haw! They’ll come back and install the gates next week.
I thought they’d be installed when the fence was installed but apparently they wait to make the gates until after the fence is in place so they can get the measurements for the gates right.
Which totally makes sense.
Oh well. That will give me enough time to get the front fence painted and the pin cushion flower border installed on the outside {street side} of the fence.
Part of me really wanted to keep the fence the natural color that it was. But adore white picket fences, they’re so inviting. Plus the studio is white and you know me, I love the color white and I like things to match.
While the fence guys were installing the fence in the front yesterday I was busy painting a portion of the side fence.
My working theory was that if I painted the fence in the morning, the stain would be dry and the HH could get started on planting the arborvitaes once the fence guys left.
It was a fantastic plan! 🙂 He was able to get 6 of them installed before calling packing it in for the afternoon.
We bought the arborvitae trees from Costco about a month ago and ever since they’ve been sitting in our yard waiting for the fence to be installed so we could get them in the ground.
Everyday {that it hasn’t rained} we’ve been out there watering them and it has been such a pain in the keister making sure they didn’t dry out while in the nursery pots.
Normally arborvitae isn’t on my go-to list of plants but I wanted a fast growing evergreen that would create a nice privacy screen between our place and the neighbors.
We bought 12 trees but it looks like we’ll only be able to get 11 in the ground because we have a bird’s nest snuggled in one of the trees!!! How sweet is that?

The color we chose {last fall} for the colonial door – bird’s egg blue.
Umm… I think we’re going to have to stop calling it “the studio” and instead call it “bird cottage”. I mean, I don’t know how many more signs we need.
Other things I’ll be doing this weekend… Planting zinnia seeds. The packet somehow slipped under the canning cupboard and I just found it yesterday. Whoops!
I also started listening to Chasing Beauty: The Life of Isabella Stewart Gardener so I’ll be listening to that while I work on my giant whale rug.

Oh Mavis so happy you are painting the fence white. I wanted to say that yesterday but didn’t want to hurt your feelings about staining. White picket fences are just perfection if you ask me. In our very colonial house we had one time I had a small herb garden and I actually painted that picket fence around it black and I loved that so much (the trim on the house was black with deep tan on the house). I am so excited for this to all come together.

I have picked about 27 lbs of veggies so far in the garden! That means I have work to do . . .
1) Canning: Dill Relish and Pico de Gallo (I already used the zucchini and canned Zucchini in Pineapple Juice)
2) Cooking: Eggplant Parmigiana
Costco had a great deal on pork loin ($6.00 off each package) – I will cut it up and freeze it in portions. I also need to hem some pants for hubby (Costco had sales on those as well).
Only one more week till I close my Etsy shop! I have 42 items left – whatever doesn’t get sold, I will donate somewhere.
It’s gonna be a busy day!

I’d say “Birdcage”… but it’s a famous theater/saloon/brothel in Nevada. Maybe not.
I’ll be doing some planting, too — a friend has a bunch of Russian Sage and Catmint self-plants she wants to get rid of. If I can manage to keep them growing, it will help our front yard so much. But… it is incredibly hot and dry for this early in the season. Colorado is in the middle of a drought right now – 2 years and counting. (We did get some rain the past few days, for which everyone is very grateful.)

Fence looks great and I would have voted for a natural stain but I see what you mean by a white picket fence. It just goes with your vibe. Went to the beach this afternoon because, well it was the last day of school for not-so-little -anymore miss and it was just a glorious afternoon. Lawnmowing and yard care are on the agenda here. Clubbing years are long in the rearview mirror. Have a good one everyone! Oh and some hooking on the deck to be sure. Can’t wait to see the large whale rug finished!

That book, the chasing beauty book. The cover is a famous painting by Swedish painter Anders Zorn. I recognized the painting instantly-an instructor showed it to me in an art class. But didn’t know who it was of. Apparently she was close friends with Zorn. Interesting, the famous artwork and then now a book about the woman in the painting.
