Yesterday, the HH and I were putting the new bed together next door {what a chore that was!} and we started talking about mattresses and how when we were kids there weren’t as many choices as there are today.
And, how mattresses back then seemed to last FOREVER. And they were cheap too.
Or maybe it just seemed that way because neither of us paid any attention to things like that when we were young.
In fact I remember the first mattress the HH and I owned was a used mattress that my Grandmother bought for us at a yard sale for $50.
And we didn’t think anything of it because hey… It was clean, something to sleep on and when you’re young and have extremely limited funds a used mattress is better than sleeping on a hard floor, right?
But times have changed and we’re fancy folk now and we buy new mattresses and last year we bought a Leesa “original”foam mattress {with no upgrades} when it went on sale.
It’s been such a comfortable mattress, {not too soft, not too hard} that when they recently went on sale again, we decided to buy one for the guest bedroom.
I don’t know why, but it seems crazy to me that a bed so comfortable can be shipped in such a small box. And that it is made from foam!
All you have to do is remove the packaging and let it expand. It doesn’t get any easier than that if you ask me.
In a time where there are so many choices when it comes to mattresses, I’m so glad we found one we both like.
What kind of mattress do you sleep on? A traditional bed with wire springs? A foam mattress? An adjustable one? An uber fancy Shetland wool and horsetail mattress? 😉

Both beds we bought are the “Original” – We did not choose any upgrades and it is the least inexpensive mattress. We love it.

That’s a cute bed. I’ve tried 4 or 5 different foam mattresses, plus others when we visit family & they all end up hurting my back & are way too hot for me – even the cooling ones. I’m a Saatva girlie all the way. I love their classic luxury firm. Hubby loves their memory foam hybrid. We have a split king (a queen wouldn’t fit up our tiny attic stairs), so it works great because we can both have the mattress we like.

We have always had traditional mattresses and even though ours is about 10 years old I thought we might be needing a new one soon. It looks fine it sleeps fine and so expensive but everyone keeps saying you need to change them every 7-10 years. When we got to our sons house in Kentucky we sleep on a Purple Matress. Oh my they are so nice and haven’t slept that good in forever. Never thought about a foam mattress. Started checking the prices and I thought nahhh I can keep up with this one for a while longer. Dang when did they get so expensive in the last 10 or 15 years?

I have a 2 stage foam mattress that I picked up on Amazon for dirt cheap during prime days 5 years ago. The top 4 inches is a medium firmness and the bottom 8 extra firm. I love it and it’s held up a lot better than I thought it would.

Sleep Number all the way. Each side gets the firmness they want, which can also change and adjust with you and life. Also, the mattress lasts forever!

Traditional all the way. We have Serta. Not so much as a pillow top, either.
I can’t abide foam–it doesn’t breathe and gets way too hot.

I got a new mattress and box spring (with a size upgrade) in October of 2019 and I’m ready to get rid of it already. Its horrible. Its a traditional spring mattress that’s a brand name and its absolutely garbage. I’m trying to make do as long as possible because money is tight.

30+ year old extra firm Simmons Beautyrest! We flip it occasionally. No sunken sleeping areas. I love it, hubby thinks it’s time to replace. I just can’t imagine a foam mattress being as well made and lasting even half as long. The marketing is all about an inferior product needing frequent replacement. My son bought a Casper about a year ago and he said it already has a permanent indentation. It’s hard to find a reasonably priced old school mattress.

We’ve got a Sleep Number adjustable split California King. I have had several surgeries since we got it. I could elevate the head of the bed to help me get out of bed without hurting my abdominal surgical incisions and muscles that had been cut. Later, I had knee replacement surgery and needed to sleep with the leg elevated, so then I could elevate the lower half of the mattress to keep that leg up. Finally, when you lose a lot of weight, you need different firmness. I could easily adjust the firmness of the mattress without having to change my husband’s personal settings. This bed has been a godsend!

If you like a soft sleep, get yourself a feather bed topper. I have one and put a down comforter on top of it and it’s like sleeping on a cloud. No more waking up with back, shoulder or hip pain.
