I recently watched The Big Year on a flight, and I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised.  I was expecting goofy and ridiculous, but it was actually amusing and clever.  If you are looking for a light-hearted feel-good movie, you should totally check it out.  It’s about three men, each in different phases of their life, who go on a year long adventure {turned competition} to do all of the things they always dreamed about doing.

The HH and I stared watching Mad Men a few weeks ago, and it’s shocking to see how women were treated back in the 60′s, not to mention the affairs… holy stilettos people…. aren’t those people exhausted already?  Still. I.  Can’t. Stop. Watching. It.  What is it about shows like that?!  They grab a hold of you, I tell ya. We are on season 3 right now but plan to watch them all.

Friday Night at the Movies – Boyhood

I’ve been hearing a lot about the movie Boyhood lately.  It’s claim to fame is that they filmed it over several years–usually the same childhood actor.  While it is a fictional story, using the same actor, it is supposed to be a really touching “coming of age” type movie.  It’s available for pre-order on Amazon right now {which is still cheaper than me and the HH going to the theater}, so I am thinking about checking it out.

Anyone seen yet?  Is it worth watching?

Friday Night at the Movies – Pretty in Pink

Ok, so now that I’ve watched Sixteen Candles, I’m on a Molly Ringwald AND John Hughes obsession…which is lucky for me, because she is in a lot of his movies.  Tonight I’m watching Pretty in Pink.  I watched it last year for the first time in ages, and now I can’t get enough.  It’s my favorite way to relive those awkward 80′s memories:  in my pj’s and a million years actually being in the decade again :) .

Sidenote:  There can’t be a single person out there who can’t immediately sing OMD’s “If You Leave,” all because of this movie.   Try not to sing it right now, I dare you.

Friday Night at the Movies – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

My 80′s revival is still going strong.  Tonight we are going to watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on the laptop since our t.v. has been packed up.  Maybe with The Girl off to college I am trying to recapture the light-heartedness of my youth?  Or maybe I just think this movie is awesome.  Either way, it’s free on Prime and I’m watching it.

Remember how COOL Mathew Broderick was?  I think we were all pretty much in love with Ferris, wouldn’t you say? ;)

I’m still truckin’ along on my John Hughes kick.  Tonight, I’m planning on watching Sixteen Candles.  I like to re-watch it every few years because…well, it’s awesome.  If you haven’t seen it {you’ve been living under a rock, and it’s time to come out…kidding}, it’s about a girl whose family forgets her 16th birthday.  It’s “what’s happenin’ hot-stuff,” so you should totally check it out :) .

Friday Night at the Movies – Uncle Buck

I’m on a John Hughes kick lately.  He seriously puts out what I would call the “classics” of the 80′s and 90′s.  This weekend, I am going to watch Uncle Buck.  In case you haven’t seen it, it’s about a couple who need someone to watch their kids while they head out of town on a family emergency.  The only option is the husband’s less-than-desirable brother:  Uncle Buck.  John Candy is awesome as Uncle Buck–seriously, you will quote this movie for the rest of your life.

I love revisiting my favorite comedies.  What’s your favorite John Hughes movie?  Maybe I’ll add it to my fall line-up.

Friday Night at the Movies – The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Tonight I am going to watch The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.  I have wanted to see it since it came out {in 2008, I am only a little late}, but never got around to it.  It is about the son of a German soldier who befriends a little boy on the other side of the fence of a concentration camp.  It is supposed to be excellent, though, with fair warning, it will probably be heart-wrenching.

Friday Night at the Movies – Second Hand Lions

We are pretty busy around here, so no movie for us this Friday, but if you are looking for a movie the whole family {older kids, at least, it’s rated PG} can watch, I recommend you check out Second Hand Lions.

It’s about a little boy that has a less than desirable life with his flighty irresponsible mother.  The mother decides on a whim to drop him off to spend the summer with two uncles he has never met.   It is such a great story about a boy {and ultimately the uncles} getting what he needs, when he needs it most.  It’s one of those surprisingly feel good movies, with quirky humor.  It really is great.

Friday Night at the Movies – Chocolat

Amazon just added Chocolat to their list of free movies Prime members can stream.  If you have never seen it, let me tell you, you really should.  It is about a woman who moves to a small village and opens a chocolaterie.  First of all, it’s about chocolate.  I really shouldn’t have to say more.  But, it is also a great story about the little french village and the people in it.
