how to earn free airline tickets

It’s no big secret around here that I LOVE to travel. In fact if I could have any job in the world, I’d love to be a writer for National Geographic Traveler Magazine or play the role of Samantha Brown on the Travel Channel for a year.

Sometimes I score super awesome last minute deals from Expedia on airline tickets, and other times I get them for free.

tower of london tickets{Tower of London, Spring 2013}

Now before I start, I want to make it very clear the way I go about earning free tickets may not be for everyone. I use 2 specific credit cards to earn points and we charge practically everything we possibly can to rack up those points.

I know not everyone likes to use credit cards because they either have a hard time paying them off every month, or prefer to use the cash system and not charge anything, or they simple don’t own a credit card at all.

And that is fine. This is just how my family does it.

paris{Monkey Boy and the Girl in Paris 2006}

We started traveling heavily around 2006 when we earned out first set of free tickets to Europe. It took us 2 years to earn the points, and the whole time the Handsome Husband played the Debbie Downer role saying there was no way we’d be able to redeem 4 free {$1,200} tickets to Europe from our credit card company.

I grew up in a family that traveled.  The Handsome Husband’s family did not. Basically I wanted my kids to see the world, have some adventures and get some travel experiences under their belts before they headed off to collage.

I didn’t want them to enter adulthood thinking traveling the globe was out of their reach, or that they couldn’t afford it. I also wanted to teach them to be spontaneous. To live in the moment, and if they found an awesome deal and were able to afford it, they should be like Nike and Just Do It.

Starwood-Preferred-Guest-Credit-Card

The two credit cards I use are the Alaska Airlines Visa Card and the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card {you’ll have to type in Starwood Preferred into the search box}. I try and use the Starwood Preferred card as much as I can because for every 20,000 points I earn, I can redeem those 20,000 points for 25,000 Alaska Airlines mileage points.

It takes 20,000 points for a free domestic ticket and 40,000 free points for 1 ticket to Europe with the Alaska Airlines program. Plus, with the Alaska Airlines card, each card holder earns a $99 companion fare ticket every year as well.

boise-idaho-dirty-dash-picture (1){Boise Dirty Dash, Summer 2012}

The Alaska Airlines Signature card charges an annual fee of $75. After you sign up, you will receive 25,000 bonus points after your first purchase. Translation: You get 1 free airline ticket.

The Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card has a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $65 thereafter.

After you sign up you can earn up to 25,000 bonus points: 10,000 after your first purchase and another 15,000 after you spend $5,000 within the first 6 months of Card membership.

Mavis-Butterfield crappy british teeth{Mavis and her crappy British teeth}

Like I said, we charge everything from dental bills, utilities, groceries, gas, you name it, if we can use our credit card to rack up points, then we use the card. We’ve also been able to earn some extra points over the years because my husband travels occasionally for work and when he does he charges all his purchases. Which  he gets reimbursed for of course, but the points are ours to keep.

I do understand this type of travel planning doesn’t work for everyone. This method only works if you pay off  your credit card balance in full each month. No exceptions.

If you are not in the habit of paying off your credit cards each month,  then don’t charge all your bills and purchases in hopes of earning yourself a free vacation. It makes no sense to pay interest on a credit card just to earn some free travel. It’s only free if you don’t have to pay for it.

Traveling is RAD, and I wish I could do it every week.

Have YOU ever cashed in your credit card miles for an airline ticket? If so, what is your favorite rewards credit card to use?

Mavis wants to know.

Trash Collection in London

london trash in the street

Normally I like to start every Tuesday with pictures of the reclaimed food I was able to pick up from Mr. Produce Guy over the previous week. However this week we were out of town on our usual pick up day {we let Mr. Produce Guy we’d be gone ahead of time}. No pick up, means no free produce, for us or our chickens. So today I thought I would talk about something else instead. Trash.

cardboard box

Back in 2006 when our {whole}  family took our  first trip to London we noticed that every night as shops closed their doors they would set their trash on the street in front of their shops.

Here in America everything goes into dumpsters or trash cans, so we thought it was both rather odd {and charming at the same time}. Charming? Garbage can be charming?

trash

Well sort of.

If you look closely at the bags in some of the pictures are marked for recycling. Which made me wonder, do Londoner’s BUY specific bags to toss their trash? Does the city give them the bags?

How much does trash collection cost in the UK vs the States?

curbside trash

Clearly this picture of trash was taken outside of a small hotel because it’s filled with shopping bags. Either that or it was payday and the owners of the trash went on a major shopping spree.

trash

Is it weird that I found this fascinating enough to take pictures?

Am I off my rocker?

Did some well dressed man give me a strange look when he opened the door to his home and found some strange American taking a picture of his recyclables?

Um… YES! I actually thought The Girl was going to faint.

I thought it was hilarious, The Girl found it mortifying, and the man just closed his door on me. Whatever. One man’s trash, is another man treasure, and I had to make sure he wasn’t throwing out any treasures.

Thank you people of London for making my day. Even if all you did was throw out your trash.

orchid floral arrangements

The Girl and I took over 600 pictures at Kew Royal Botanic Gardens during our visit. There was so much to take in that it was really overwhelming when we walked though the doors of each of the indoor gardens.

Kew Royal Botanic Gardens - Orchids

So to break up the pictures, my first post will be about the incredibly gorgeous orchid display which is currently being held in the Princess of Wales Conservatory.

In a nutshell, I want to pack the worlds largest picnic lunch and move in to the place for at least a month so I can examine every.single.flower.

lilypads

There must have been over 1,000 different shades of green in the conservatory alone. And I’m from Seattle, so you’d think I would have had my fill of green by now. But no, this place, was magical.

white orchid pink spots

I probably would not have even known about these gardens if it had not been for the Telegraph article a few weeks ago. I was hoping to run into the girl with auburn hair, but no such luck.

Kew Royal Botanic Gardens Orchids pictures

The pictures were simply stunning and once I knew we were going to London for the weekend, we put a visit to Kew Botanic Gardens at the top of our list.

Look at this archway of orchids. What a perfect backdrop for a wedding.

This one is not to shabby either.

tropical flowersSo much color, so little time.

Last month when I was in Denver the Denver Botanic Gardens had orchids on display as well. So I’m guessing maybe this is the time of year orchids are on display at botanic gardens all over the world. So if you have a botanic garden nearby, please, please, please take a day and go for a visit. You won’t regret it.

Peace Out Girl Scouts,

Have a beautiful Monday,

Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens

Yesterday The Girl and I walked through Hyde Park and Kensington gardens. It’s our favorite park in the entire world. Even though it was just above freezing and tiny snowflakes were falling, we spent about 2 hours strolling {and later biking} through the park.

spring flowers

In about another month, the spring bulbs will be blooming like crazy.

restaurant hyde park london

In case you didn’t know, Hyde Park was originally a private hunting ground for Henry VIII. The park remained private until James I opened it to the public, and handed its care over to a park ranger {though, the manicured lawns and landscaping that it is known for today didn’t happen until much, much later}.

serpentine lake hyde park

Hyde Park, as we know it today, is split in two by the Serpentine {a 40 acre recreational lake}.    Hyde Park itself is 350 acres {think how many vegetables I could grow there!}.  Kensington Gardens is next to Hyde Park and is an additional 270 acres.

hyde park london arched trellis

Most people think they are all one in the same, but they were separated into two parks by Queen Caroline in 1728.  With all of that space, it is soooo easy to find a perfect spot for a picnic lunch and some people watching.

barclays bike hire rental london

The park is open from 5:00 a.m. to midnight everyday, and is typically filled with people running or just taking a stroll.  It has awesome bike paths and you can even rent paddle boats.  {Sadly, we couldn’t rent a paddle boat because the boat house is only open from Easter to October 31st.  Sniffle, sniffle.}  If you are more adventurous, you can swim in the Serpentine after June or even ride horses on one of the designated paths.

spring flowers hyde park

Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens are gorgeous. Even when it’s freezing outside and the blooms are far and few between.

Do YOU have a favorite park? If so, where is it, and why do you love it so?

No matter what country we travel to, one of our first stops is the grocery store. Not only is it fun to see what the locals eat, but it’s also pretty cool to see how much an item costs.

One of the really neat things they do in the UK is print the country of origin on the package of fruits and vegetables. I find this fascinating. If stores in the US A printed where the food was imported from in a prominent place on a package, I’d bet people would be more encourage people to buy in season, and who knows, maybe even take a trip to their local Farmer’s Market.

What do YOU think?

INTERNATIONAL SNOW SCULPTURE CHAMPIONSHIPS

While we were in Colorado last week, we drove to the town of Breckenridge, Colorado for the 2013 International Snow Sculpture Championships. This was my first trip to Breckenridge, and it was awesome. In fact, I’d totally move there if I could. The town was beautiful, filled with families, and everyone seemed really happy. Even if it was freezing cold.

Here are a few pictures of my favorite snow sculptures {the Easter Egg was my favorite}.

mavis butterfield botanical interests seed company

As soon as we landed in Denver we hit the road and headed to Botanical Interests seed company in Broomfield, Colorado. When we arrived there was a huge welcome sign for us and two other people. Bill and Marty? Who the heck are Bill and Marty?

Because the sign was on an easel, and multiple sheets of paper had been torn off, we thought hmmm, they must give a lot of tours. But just as we were about to ask Curtis {He and his wife Judy co-own the company}how many tours they give a year, Bill and Marty showed up. With Ryan. My hottie of a horticulturalist online boyfriend.

Which was really awkward, because Bill and Marty were Ryan’s PARENTS!  And it get’s even better. Apparently Ryan’s fiancé works at Botanical Interests too!

Awesome. Almost Wet My Pants.

After our little meet and great, Jim the warehouse manager took us on a behind the scenes tour.

bulk seeds

Jim was awesome. Not only did he show us around, but he pointed out large sacks of seeds, showed us where they test the seed that comes in from the different fields and where they lock up all the temperature controlled and specialty seeds. I didn’t notice a wedding band on Jim’s ring finger so if you are from the Denver area, let me know. I’ll try and hook you up.

We also got up close and personal with the guys running the seed packet machines.

seed company tour

Botanical Interests sells over 600 different kinds of seeds. So you can imagine these guys pack a lot of seeds on any given day of the week.

seed packet machine

It’s pretty obvious guys are in charge of this area. How do I know that? Do you see the duct tape holding together the seed tray? Need I say more?

botanical interests seed company tour picture

Here is Jim explaining the date on the seed packets to Amber. Clearly Jim did his research and knew Amber needed all the help she could get when it comes to planting a backyard garden.

ellen botanical interets seed company

Oh and this is Ellen. I think she is pretty much in charge of everything. Including judging the new drawings that come in from various Botanical Interests artists. I can only imagine how hard it must be to critique artwork. Yikes. What a tough job.

We learned so much from our behind the scenes tour it was awesome. We had no idea until the end of tour that they only give about 3 tours a year. Wowza! How cool was that? So a big thank you to Curtis, Ryan, Jim, Ellen, Judy, Buddy and the rest of the gang at Botanical Interests, we had a blast!

Thank You.

If you ever find yourself in Laguna Beach, California you should make a trip to Laguna Nursery.  It’s about a mile and a half from Main Beach and oh boy is it an eclectic oasis of garden goodness.

citrus trees

The Girl and I stopped by the store while we were on our mini Christmas vacation and spotted tons of different citrus trees and cactus’s around the back of the store. I totally wanted to buy on of the lemon trees and bring it home.

Do YOU have a lemon tree? I totally want a Meyer Lemon tree, BIG TIME. I wonder if I could overwinter it in the greenhouse, or would I have to bring it indoors? The HH would freak if he had to walk by a lemon tree every morning on his way to make his coffee.
