Last week was probably one of my favorite weeks {food wise} for us this year. So far anyway. đ Lot’s of homemade, from scratch cooking with some experimentation and plenty of leftovers.
I love it when that happens. There is no need to let leftovers go to waste in the fridge. Just box it up and pop it in the freezer and enjoy it on a night when you don’t feel like cooking.
Here’s a look at what we ate last week:
Copycat Panera creamy chicken soup with rice. This stuff is CRAZY GOOD!!! If you haven’t already tried this recipe, hop to it! You’ll be so glad you did.
The HH’s homemade chicken soup. This and the copycat Panera tomato soup are always in my freezer for nights we don’t feel like cooking.
Mashed potatoes with a side of beettloaf. đ
I had some extra meatloaf that wouldn’t fit in the pan so I made meatballs with the leftovers.
Broccoli salad with bacon and cashews. We are down to our last package of Costco bacon. đ Have you had their bacon? I think it’s my favorite brand.
Aidel’s sausage with roasted vegetables {potatoes, butternut squash and onions}.
And my experiment of the week: Sweet and savory tarts.
I used my apple pie filling for the fruit tart and filled the savory one with some leftover chicken, frozen spinach, and feta {I keep my container in the freezer… it lasts longer that way} and some roasted carrots and beets.
The savory tart was good… But it could be better. I think it needs some more moisture in it. Maybe a balsamic glaze? So I’ll need to work on that.
Hannaford $7.28
My big purchase of the week was a 5 pound bag of carrots for $4.29 and celery $2.99.
Usually I am not a fan of Hannaford’s prices. But whoa Nelly, this week they have some great deals:
- Frozen turkeys $0.47 a pound {limit of 2 and there is no shopping minimum}
- 80/20 Ground beef $1.87 a pound
- Pork butt $0.87 a pound
- Sweet potatoes and onions $0.47 a pound
- Hannaford bacon 16 ounces $3.50
I don’t know about you, but it smells like a stock up trip coming. Because seriously, at those prices, it would be silly not to load up on those deals.
Are YOU seeing deals like this where YOU are? Have you been able to stock up on anything exciting lately? Let us know in the comment section below.
Have a good one,
~Mavis

Those are wonderful prices! Get thee to the grocery store! With meat prices expected to be astronomical for the next 2 years, it’s the perfect time for this sale.

I would say, if I’m allowed, screw the budget, those care insane prices!! I don’t began like beef anymore and I would buy some. Now, the butt?!? I would buy as many as I could. That is the most versatile hunk of meat. Also, if they had country style ribs, which are cut from the butt, on sale, those are great because I’m betting they won’t want to do it for you.

Keeping feta in the freezer! Genius idea. I don’t know why I have never thought of that.

Last week we got a turkey from Publix for .49/lb. Total cost was $5.13. There are only 3 of us so a 10 lb turkey is plenty. We also got the huge pumpkin pie from Costco for $5.99. The pumpkin pie is already half gone . . . probably need to get another one . . .
Those deals at Hannaford are great – I am hoping the stores in my area will do the same.

Your Creamy Chicken and Wild Rice soup is my family’s favorite soup. I think I could eat it every day in the fall and winter. I don’t even remember what we ate last week, but this coming week we are having Boston Butt. My son’s Scout troop smokes them and they are so good. I know we will have BB sandwiches with barbeque sauce, loaded baked potatoes with leftover BB on top and some kind of soup made with leftover BB also. We will see where we go from there.

It seems every grocery store chain is doing the “throwback” prices BUT none of them are as low as yours!!!! I wish I lived in Maine! The only things that are on “throwback” here are the items you would use for a typical Thanksgiving meal. You need to run to Scammaford!!!!!

Iâll buy my big family sized turkey later in the week, but was able to get a small fresh 12 lb one which I divided into 2 boneless breast pieces (for sandwich meat), 2 thighs for stir fry, 2 wings for extra for Thanksgiving, and two legs for turkey leg pot roast. Already canned my cranberry sauce. Love your recipe for the tomato soup, one of my faves. That with a good old fashion grilled cheese sandwich canât be beat!

Whoa those prices are beyond fantastical!!!!! Too bad it’s a 2500 mile drive đ
Cheers to fall eating and that your kitchen is fully inhabital now!

I paid .98 cents a pound for my Turkey at Walmart and thought I was doing pretty good. Cheapest we have seen are $1.29 a pound and I need two turkeys and a ham for my huge clan. Everything is expensive here. We are thankful we bought a side of beef because ground beef is about six dollars a pound and that is at ALDI.
Kim says
I bought 3 turkeys from Walmart this week. I can’t buy any other cut of protein for this cheap, so I bought two to eat some time in the future.
I also loaded up on that butter deal from Aldi’s! Hamburger meat was $2.97 a pound, so I bought a bunch of that, too.
I live in northern Michigan, but if I lived some place with a Hanover’s, I’d be stocking up there as well.
Melinda says
Butter at Aldi was $1.99/lb, limit 6. I bought 6!

I, too, purchased a turkey from Publix yesterday at 49 cents a pound. I walked up to our cart with a frozen turkey and my husband said, âWhat are you doing?? We arenât hosting Thanksgiving this year.â I got a whole turkey for $8.01- I checked it 3 times on the way to the checkout- which is the same or less than a price of 1 package of turkey cold cuts. We stopped by cold cuts since the prices skyrocketed. I rearranged the freezer when I got home and will got back and get another this week.
Side note: My husband HATES turkey. However, after going to the grocery store with me, he âgets it.â We will use it in soups, in sandwiches and on top of salads- probably a month of lunches.
JoAnn Young says
Hi Susan, Great deal! We also wait for the Publix Thanksgiving sale on turkeys every year. We DO host Thanksgiving but we buy about 3- 10 lb-er’s to eat throughout the year. We have a large freezer. You cannot buy meat for .47 lb ANYWHERE!
Debbie says
Got fresh yams today for 25 cents a pound Wow what a great surprise!
Dianne says
I would definitely run to the store and stock up. Those are fantastic prices! I got my turkey for $1.09. I picked up 24 lbs of butter at $1.99 from Aldi’s. Grocery store sale price for butter was $4.49 a lb. Land o’ Lakes was $6.49 a pound!!
I bet it is wonderful to be cooking and baking again! Enjoy!

I was thinking about how high food prices are these days, and I realized our CSA has not raised their prices at all. This week we got bananas, apples, mango, garlic, Russet potatoes, bell peppers, two heads of broccoli, carrots, spinach, celery, and a dozen eggs. All locally grown/raised and delivered to our door for $32. Feeling extra thankful for the people who run the CSA this year.
VA says
WHAT IS CSA? I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT.
Jennifer says
Community supported agriculture. Each month you get, based on the growing season, a box of local raised fresh produce and some may include other items like eggs. It helps small farmers and it’s all local so much fresher and some may be organic at times.
Annette says
Butter at my Aldi (Kansas) is 2.49. đ
JoAnn Young says
2,99 in Central FL. That’s better than 4.99.

There is only one grocery store in my small town, everything else is at least a half-hour drive if you’re doing 60 mph. This little store gouges us because it’s the only place in town that carries most things. Our Kwik trip is running a special for potatoes at 0.29/lb and sweet potatoes at 0.39/lb right now. The only special at our grocery store is a Jennie-O turkey at 0.99/lb IF you buy $100 worth of other groceries, not including alcohol or paper products. It’s surely not hard to spend the $100 here, seeing as I just bought a ham that cost me $37. Prices are astronomical.
Trica says
I stocked up on those Hannaford prices this week. They were out of ground beef, but they did issue me a raincheck good for 30 days, so I’ll get 20#. I’m kicking myself for missing a sale on butter at a local grocer for 2.99 #, which is cheap for here. Got apples for 25 cent a pound a couple of weeks ago from a local orchard by picking up drops on my own. At Mardens, tuna was 69 cents a can, rice 50 cents # and some canned beans 50 cents. There are deals to be had if you hunt.
