Last weekend we went with our neighbors to check out the tiny seaside town of Camp Ellis along the coast of Maine. I was so busy looking around at all the little shops, lobster pounds, bait and tackle place, gift stores, restaurants and houses along the shore, that I only took this one photo of a mural painted on the side of a building while we were in the little village.
There were SO MANY things to see! {If you’ve never been or heard of Camp Ellis before, Down East Magazine wrote a wonderful article about the place and you can read it HERE.}
On the way home we stopped off at Garside’s Ice Cream Stand in Saco, Maine which just happens to be a short drive from Camp Ellis. Our neighbors had been there many times before, but this was our first visit.
I don’t know about you, but when it comes to ice cream stands or any restaurant in general, I’m not an adventurous person and I almost always order the same thing. But my husband is the type who has to read the ENTIRE menu before ordering. {And it makes me crazy!}
Garside’s has been making and selling ice cream along Ferry Road in Saco, Maine since 1955 and man oh man do they have a ton of flavors to choose from.
I still haven’t tried Grape-Nut {it’s a thing here in New England, but I don’t know… I just can’t seem to muster up the courage to give it a go}.
So I ordered my usual banana split, and it was wonderful, a 5 out of 5. And the girl behind the window got major bonus points for asking do you want it traditional… {because what kind of crazy person would order anything else besides chocolate, strawberry and vanilla for a banana split!?}. Seriously!
Garside’s Ice Cream, go check them out. You’ll be so glad you did. 🙂
Peace Out Girl Scouts, I’m off to pick tomatoes before it gets to hot out there,

What did HH get? I suspect he is more adventurous with his ice cream selections…and of course you have to read the ENTIRE menu so you don’t miss anything 🙂

why is a quart and a 1/2 gallon the same price?
Patty P says
The quart is hand packed, so it is more compacted. The 1/2 gallon, I’m assuming, is packed from the machine, so is more light and airy. Therefore the buyer is likely getting the same amount of ice cream either way, but the hand packed quart is more dense. I worked at an ice cream shop about 10 years ago, and our hand packed vs. machine packed prices were much different due to this.

Interesting! Thanks Patty P.

I look forward to your posts and adventures daily! Love the positivity!

Ask for a sample of the Grape-Nut. Most ice cream shops will let you sample a flavor or two while you decide on your order. If you hate it, no harm done.
KC says
I mean: grape-nut custard, you tried it and liked it, so… it doesn’t seem like that much of a jump to go from a custard you liked to an ice cream you liked? But even little jumps where foods are involved are scary sometimes. 🙂
(I do like the idea of asking for a sample! Not sure they can do it with COVID, but worth inquiring.)

My HH only has vanilla or butter pecan, me I like the odd ball flavors. I would of picked a scoop of blueberry cheesecake and banana nut bread in a waffle cone.

As much as I have always liked pineapple, I am allergic to it (particularly fresh) so “traditional is out for me. Sorry
Linda Practical Parsimony says
I am allergic to pineapple, too. But, I doubt there is enough to bother me. All these years I have eaten lots of pineapple, and now know I am allergic to it.

Mavis – What did the HH choose after reading all those flavors?
Mavis Butterfield says
He read the entire menu and then had a hot fudge sundae. 🙂

I think the grape nut custard is an acquired taste where as the ice cream is a sweet, creamy no-brainer. Try it. It might be surprisingly good!

I remember when an ice cream company here in Ohio had a radio ad touting the natural flavors used in their products, and then mentioned their Specialty Flavors…(wait for it…) Tin Roof and Rocky Road! I’d burst into laughter every time I heard the commercial!

It’s funny to see that the “Tom Brady Avocado” selection has been canceled. Guess those New Englanders really didn’t like him going to the Tampa Bay Bucs!!
Mavis Butterfield says
I thought it was funny too! 🙂
