Get Back To The Basics + Learning to Unplug
I was pretty much unplugged all of last week from outside distractions.
The only time I was really plugged in was for maybe about 45 minutes in the mornings {for writing the blog, checking emails} and in the evenings when I listened to an audiobook while I worked on a hooked rug.
I’m listening to All The Light We Cannot See right now… Have you read it?
Other than that, I wasn’t online. It was pretty awesome. 🙂
In The Kitchen
I am currently on “I will eat anything that is put in front of me” mode. I did manage to bake some of my favorite cookies and a batch of granola though.
Kitchen Goals For This Year
- Master the pear frangipane tart from Standard Baking Company.
- Put my Weck jars to use.
- Use two bins of beans.
Rug Hooking
I finished drawing all the patterns and putting together all the kits! HOLY MOLEY that was a lot of work and I am SO GLAD to be done!!!
All I have left to do is to put together the 12 stacks of wool and I’ll be FINISHED. My goal was to have all the wool stuff done by April 1st and it looks like I am going to make it!!
I can’t tell you what a relief it will be to check this goal off my list.
Also, I hooked, finished and listed 4 new pillows in my Etsy shop. It was a busy week!
Rug Hooking Goals For This Year
- Finish drawing out all my patterns, making kits, dyeing wool by March 31st. {98% done!!!}
- Release 10 new rug hooking patterns/kits. {3 down 7 to go}
- Hook 27 of the patterns from the “someday I’ll hook these” bin. {4 down 23 to go}
Go New Places – See New Things
Where would you rather spend 4 hours? The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or The Statue of Liberty? Jen and I are working on our schedule and trying to decide.
Travel Goals For This Year
- Travel someplace {internationally} that I’ve never been before.
- Travel somewhere in Maine {overnight} that I haven’t been before.
Places I’ve Been So Far This Year
- Boston {Birthday getaway}
Walk And Stretch More
We got a couple of good walks in but nothing like the ones The Kiln Guy and The Chef are getting in Portugal!!
They rented an Airbnb for the entire month of March and I can’t wait to hear all about their trip when they get back. I bet they’ll have a nice tan!
Walking/Stretching Goals For This Year
- Get into some sort of stretching routine
- Fast walk a 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon {signed up for a half marathon}
Garden
I am counting down the days until the Amazing Grace tulips are in bloom. I hope they survived the winter because there is no sign of them popping through the soil yet.
Those and the yellow ones were my favorites last year. We planted some new varieties last fall and I’m looking forward to those too.
Are your tulips coming up yet? How about daffodils? Mine are about an inch above the soil right now.
Garden Goals For This Year
- Rework the driveway and garden areas
- Go crazy and plant a ridiculous amount of flowers
- Step out of my comfort zone and plant some flowers I’ve never planted before
Paint
About zero painting got done. It was wool 24/7 around here. 😉
Hey! It’s Monday. I hope you have a good one.
~Mavis
Painting Goals For This Year
- The Van Gogh wall
- The gallery wall down stairs
- The captains wall in the hall
- Trim and walls

Not on your list this trip, but for another trip. I would recommend the Tenement Museum in NYC. I thought it was so interesting!
Cindy R says
When I visited the Statue of Liberty it was awesome and somber to see the history and learn about what immigrants had to go through. This was before 9/11 so it may not be the same experience today.
Nancy says
Definitely the Met! If you have time, the Cloisters Museum would be a great visit as well.
Laurie says
I second this recommendation!
Teresa M says
Metropolitan Museum of Art! MOMA is also interesting!
Dawn says
Absolutely The Met.
My tulips are just starting to sprout. I can’t wait to see their little heads nodding in the wind.
Susan says
I second the Tenement Museum and Cloisters (although it does take a while to get the the Cloisters, but so worth it in my opinion). Depending on when you’re going and how much time you have, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is also a gem.
Mona McGinnis says
Excellent book. Winter is hanging on here in NE Alberta. Lots of snow on the ground & no green in sight. Waiting, waiting…..

The Met. Hands down. I’ve always wanted to visit the Algarve. 30 days and not hopping around sounds like a scouting trip. I’m still hoping for a simple lobster or croc pattern. A girl can dream lol. I assume you need to actually draw and hook a new pattern to determine how much wool in each color is needed? I’m looking forward to seeing your completed art installations. That’s going to be so cool.

I would choose the statue; there are art museums everywhere but only one Statue of Liberty.
Sue S. says
I agree. I once did a short one-man presentation for a Master’s Degree class, dressing up like an immigrant and acting the part
It was impressive if I don’t say so myself. I vote for the Statue of Liberty.
Kimberly says
Definitely see the Met. If you want to see the Statue of Liberty take a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry. It goes right past it.
Julie says
And I came to say….hands down The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island if you really have to choose. But obviously, I am very much in the minority according to all these other comments! And yet I still think that would be what I would choose!
Jamie says
We easily could spend a day or more at The Cloisters (also known as the Met Cloisters), a museum in Fort Tryon Park. The Unicorn Tapestries from the 1500’s (Netherlands origin I think) are on display there and the museum has lots of other medieval art and architectural pieces. The gardens on-site include flowers, herbs, and other plants displayed in their art collection. The Heather garden encompasses the museum too.
Tammy says
Go to the Statue of Liberty
You need more than 4 hours for the Met
Laura says
Add in the newly renovated and reopened Frick
Tiffany F says
In your situation, going with a friend, I’d choose the Met. If I was taking my family/kids, I would do the Statue of Liberty. But, I’ve done the Statue of Liberty before; if I hadn’t, I would also have a hard time choosing.

I LOVED “All the light you cannot see”. It’s one of my favorite books. The movie is excellent too. Of course they have to omit some of the subplots in the movie. The movie’s actresses have visual impairments and they are excellent in their roles. I actually reread it I liked it so much.

Oops “..WE cannot see”.
