Stay Healthy!
Hello Fall. You look beautiful. The long walks with Lucy have started up again and with the daylight hours getting shorter, I think it’s more important than ever to get her outside and worn out before dark. She’s kind of like a toddler that way. You need to wear her out or they get a little crazy in the evenings.

Keep My Husband Busy
The grass seed the HH planted after removing those two trees and leveling the area off has finally sprouted! The evening temps have been pretty cool lately so I wasn’t sure if it was going to work… but it did.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021
The next big project on the honey do list is getting the boat out of the water. We’ll have to take the boat over to the public launch, get it on the trailer and haul it home {something we’ve never done before}. And then comes the fun part, pulling the floating dock up with a winch.
The HH decided to buy a winch and do it himself rather than pay “dock guy” to do it. If we are able to pull the floating dock up ourselves, the winch will pay for itself after only 2 1/2 uses, plus, we’ll have a winch.
Our neighbor {who’s a sailor} said he’d come over a supervise, so hopefully everything will work out. Learning something new is always a challenge, but being able to do something yourself, and saving a boatload of money in the long run, is pretty cool too.
This year’s honey do list:
- Build a new set of stairs down to the water. The old set… it’s not exactly useable.
Build a firepit near the edge of the property.{DONE!}Build a picnic table near the birch trees for summer lunches{Done!}Build 4 or 6 garden boxes for his little lady{we did raised beds this year instead}}- Build a boatload of birdhouses for the {soon to be} bird sanctuary
Create a garden path/walkway for the front garden{DONE!}Remodel the bathroom in the hallway{DONE!}- Install some sort of driveway border
- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
Things We’d Like to Buy
It wasn’t on my original list but I bought myself a set of “In the Forest” Mason Cash mixing bowls I had my eye on after one of my big rugs sold. Aren’t those little foxes adorable?
A dinghyClothesline- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
It was a good week in the “unplugged” department. Less time on the internet, and lot’s of fresh air.
- Goodbye Facebook {Done!}
- Goodbye Amazon Prime {Done!} $119 a year
- Goodbye Hulu {Done!} $54.99 a month *
- Goodbye Netflix {Done!} $7.99 a month
- Goodbye PicMonkey {Done!} $50 a year
- Goodbye keeping my cell phone in my back pocket and checking it constantly {so far so good}
- Limit time online to 3 hours a day {for writing, working, and Etsy}
* Hulu is actually now $64.99 a month for the live tv version {live sports, live news}. You can get it for $5.99 a month but all that does is play tv shows and old movies {with ads}.

Get the Photos on My Phone Down to Less Than 1,000 {started the year with 2863 photos}
I probably don’t need this photo anymore. It was to remind me to look up “To Die For” dips because we bought one at Harman’s Cheese Shop in New Hampshire over 2 years ago and it was awesome. Last night I tried looking for the dip website but it was gone. Maybe they went out of business? Anyone know for sure? Man, it was a really good cheese dip too. 🙁
*I currently have 1270 photos on my phone.
Clean Out My Closet
Yesterday was pretty chilly and so I wore a sweater. Now I only have 18 more hangers to turn around in my closet before the end of the year.

My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
The only thing left on my garden to-do list is plant 4,000 flower bulbs. WHENEVER THEY GET HERE! Hopefully I won’t be planting them in the snow.
My worker man still has a few projects though, clear the brush along the deck, and finish pruning the area that faces the road. Birdhouse birdhouse building, I think we’ll save that for December.
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}Start a lasagna garden- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border{Done}- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 8657 sales on Etsy}. Only 1343 to go!
That means I’ll have to sell 19.46 items a day until the end of the year to hit my goal. I believe in miracles. 🙂

Mel says
Is this the cheese website? If so, it looks like they’re closed for mail order until November 1st.
https://harmanscheese.com/
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes. They have an excellent aged cheddar. One of the best I’ve ever had. They are not the company that makes the dips though.
Mel says
That’s what I thought. The online order page doesn’t even open now, so I couldn’t tell whether they had the dips or just the cheese. (Planning ahead for holiday appetizers over here.)
Mary says
We love Harmons cheese too! I think you have to go to the store. I saw an ad they are open Thursday-Sunday.
Annette says
A winch will save you a boatload of money 🙂
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Well–Mavis, it’s all your fault….once upon a time you had “Complete a 5k, a 10k, a half, and a full marathon” on your list. This year I decided that if you could do it, I could, too. I’ve run many 5k’s–ran a 10k this spring, decided I could do better, ran a 2nd–had a worse time and had to do a 3rd. Ran a half (slogged through the last 1/3 of it) in May. And forced myself to do the full this past Friday (day off school after 2 nights of conferences), so timing perfect with a full weekend for recovery. *all of these virtual, BTW* I hit a wall after 20 miles and had to walk every other quarter mile, and at 23 miles was soaked to the bone after gale force winds and hail-like rain and stinging crispy leaves, so I zipped home, dried off and warmed up and changed and finished the last 3+ miles running close to home. YEA, me! (never again)
Now I can focus on some of my other goals, like finishing 50 books (almost there–but some that I’ve read don’t “qualify” for the library challenge I want to finish, so need to focus on those books) and a few other goals…
Mavis Butterfield says
Well done!!! Now you don’t have to do another one. 🙂
MamaHen says
Wow, I’m impressed and inspired by your determination to finish!
J in OH-IO says
Wow! Way to go! Great job finishing! You should be so proud of yourself and your determination! Awesome!
Holley says
The new to you things you need to do will be a breeze for you! I promise! Those are everyday normal things for people from where I’m from. If you can do ALL the other things that you have both accomplished in your life time, you can load a boat on a trailer, drive it home and use a winch! Easy Peasey!
I LOVE those Mason Cash bowls!!!! My daughters have some of the ones you got. I have a pink one, that I just had to have for some strange reason – NOTHING in my kitchen is pink except that one bowl!!!! Have you watched The Great British Baking Show? That’s how I fell in love with Mason Cash!!! I LOVE that show!
I’m having some health issues right now and haven’t been feeling good for about a month. I’m hopefully in the homestretch on the road to recovery! I feel like I’m wasting my fall going to doctor’s appointments! I NEED to get better soon so I can soak up all of the fall things!!! Hope you have a great week, Mavis!
Laura L. says
Holley,
I’m wishing you all the best and hoping your health issues are well and truly healed so that you can enjoy autumn and the upcoming holidays as well.
MamaHen says
I just made your Creamy Chicken Wild Rice Soup. I didn’t have any carrots, so I used mushrooms instead. It was still delicious! It has become my family’s favorite soup.
Claudia says
I just finished watching Victoria and Abdul and it was great!
Lisa says
I love the Mason Cash In The Forest collection. I’ve only seen them in the cream color and strongly hinted at the largest size mixing bowl for Christmas a couple years ago. The fox makes me smile every time I pull it out.
Sue says
Love my Mason-Cash bowls. Started with the hedgehog, then add red the fox, and the other 2. Someone told me they made a Christmas-themed set, but the only one I found was on eBay. The price was more than 2 sets of the woodland animals! If you ever use a pie bird when making double crust pies, C-M have a fox one.
Gigi says
I’m still waiting for my tulip order from May. They said everything is shipping by the end of October. My garlic is late too. Oh well. I guess it’ll give me an excuse to get outside in the crummy weather.
Mavis Butterfield says
Yes, I just hope it’s not windy and raining. 🙂
Lauralli says
I love those Mason Cash bowls but I would prefer something like garden flowers. So, I looked the company up online and found out they are made in England–no wonder I love them! But, alas, no garden flowers. But, they do make a nautical set that is totally up your alley! 🙂
You should make slice of pie ornaments with your love of all pies. Would make such a cute garland!
