While I’ve been busy outside planting flowers and {slowly} staining the fence, the HH has been inside the past few days sanding the floors in the two front rooms. {We plan on sanding the floors in the back of the cottage when we update the kitchen.}
Did I tell you our first visitors of the season arrive in just three weeks? Yep.
The HH starts his {33!} radiation treatments for his ear next week so we’ve been trying to get all the hard stuff done before the effects of that kick in.
Yada yada yada…
The plan was to sand the beat up and yellowed oak flooring and then refinish the oak floors with Bona NordicSeal for a nice white washed look. The photo above is what the room looked like before I painted the walls and beams and the HH started sanding the floors.
Some sections of the floor were pretty beat up. And other sections {that were protected by a rug} looked like new.
The HH sanded and refinished the floors at our last place so luckily, this time around things went much quicker.
He rented a belt sander from The Home Depot {$89 a day} and it took him about 3 hours with the belt sander to strip the floors in each room. Not too shabby if you ask me. It would have taken me months!!
Goodbye yellow floors…
Hello natural coastal vibes.
Working one section at a time, we applied the NordicSeal finish.
I went around the edges of the room.
And the HH worked the roller.
We ended up putting on the recommended two coats of NordicSeal on the floor. {Waiting 24 hours in between coats}.
After the second coat NordicSeal was totally dry, the HH used 220 grit sandpaper to gently buff out any raised wood grain.
Then he used a microfiber cloth to wipe up the dust and then after that, he went over the entire floor again with a tack cloth to make sure the whole floor was dust free.
So many steps! But totally worth it to get a nice smooth finish.
Then he applied 2 coats {waiting 24 hours in between coats} of Bona Mega One extra matte floor finish.

And this is what it looks like now. What a difference!!
The track lighting will eventually come down… But since the WHOLE downstairs has track lighting, we are going to wait until we have a plan in place for that and remove it all at once.
For now though, we’re just thrilled to have a refinished floor.

For now, would that track lighting suit to highlight some of your rugs or artwork?
Curious if you know what color is on the walls? We’re slowly changing our home over from the previous owner’s grey/teal scheme to lighter greens, blues, and creams.

I painted the wall Benjamin Moore fountain spout in eggshell. Trim is Chantilly lace semi gloss. No idea what the original color was.

Thank you! Couldn’t recall in the moment if the final look was one of the original room colors or not. We picked up Chantilly Lace for our trim based on your recommendation when we redid our living room. It complimented the very pale green very well!

I’ve been trying to convince my hubby to redo our yellowed oak floors. He thinks there will need too much dust from the sander. How bad was it using the sander?

95% of the dust goes in the bag that is attached to the sander. The HH kept the windows open when he sanded and wore a mask but there wasn’t too much dust. A little, but not a huge amount.
