Stay Healthy!
Exercise this past week has been kayaking Lucy around the cove, walking back and forth across the field adding layers to my lasagna garden {seaweed, wood chips and grass clippings} and cleaning out the garage. Seriously, why pay for a gym membership when you can hang out at home and get a boatload of work done?

Keep My Husband Busy
The man loves his wood chipper! It was too hot to chip anything yesterday but I’m sure he’ll be back at it again tomorrow.
The HH’s Honey Do List {so far} for 2021

- Install a workspace for me in the basement for dying wool
Install a fence in the front for Lucy{DONE!}Build a set of 3 bookshelves in the dining room for me{DONE!}Install a trailer hitch on the car{DONE!}
Things We’d Like to Buy
Instead of ordering a new washer and dryer set {because my husband wants to wait until our current set dies} I decided to invest in a clothesline. 🙂 Which will be AWESOME if you ask me. If the power goes out, if the old dryer keels over, or hey, if I just want the smell of crisp line dried sheets… we’ll be set. Plus, I’m excited about the savings potential too.
A dinghy- Archery Set {every camp should have archery!}
Kitchen table and chairsSideboardBench for the entryway- A full size washer and dryer set {the house came with a small stackable w/d set}
Deck chairs and a patio table set{Going the picnic table route instead}A set of 4 Adirondack chairs for the fire pit area{I LOVE these chairs!}BBQ{He bought a Blackstone Griddle instead!}2 More Kayaks
Unplug As Much As Possible {but still keep the blog, FB and Instagram}
This past week was pretty low tech. Even movie wise. I think I only watched two DVD’s. It’s amazing how much you can get done when cut out all the noise.
Unplugging is cool….
- Goodbye Facebook {Done!}
- Goodbye Amazon Prime {Done!} $119 a year
- Goodbye Hulu {Done!} $54.99 a month *
- Goodbye Netflix {Done!} $7.99 a month
- Goodbye PicMonkey {Done!} $50 a year

- Limit time online to 3 hours a day {for writing, working, and Etsy}
* Hulu is actually now $64.99 a month for the live tv version {live sports, live news}. You can get it for $5.99 a month but all that does is play tv shows and old movies {with ads}.

Read {or Listen to} 12 New Books about Maine {or written by Maine Authors}
I listened to 2 audiobooks last week {that I’d rate 7 out of 10} but I’m not going to recommend them here. Simply because I’m tired of getting really into a book and then there being 5 minutes of totally unnecessary graphic content that it totally puts a damper on the rest of the story.
Seriously, that’s what people have imaginations for. I don’t need to hear/read about it.
Books about Maine {or written by Maine authors} I’ve read this year:
- Christina Olson Her World Beyond the Canvas
- Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life
- Finding Freedom
- Maine’s Favorite Birds
- At First Light: Two Centuries of Maine Artists, Their Homes and Studios
- Bernard Langlais at the Colby College Museum of Art
- The 3,000 Mile Garden
- Becoming Teddy Roosevelt
- Here On The Island
- The Lobster Coast
Audiobooks I’ve listened to {or attempted to listen to} this year:
- The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah {I give it a 10/10}
- The Midnight Library by Matt Haig {I’d give it a 7/10}
- Wintering by Katherine May {Hit the return button after 7 minutes}

My House Projects For This Year
Since I still haven’t figured out the window situation or what we’re going to do in the kitchen yet, still on my list are: painting the exterior of the house and coming up with a list of how projects I want to tackle {or have the HH tackle} this winter.
With the weather being so cold here during the winter months and working outside not really an option, we are learning that winter is the best time to get all the indoor stuff done.
- Figure out new window treatments for the back of the house
- Come up with a game plan for the kitchen remodel {for 2022}
Paint the family room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the entryway trim and doors{DONE!}Paint the dining room walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the master bedroom walls and trim{DONE!}Paint the barnand add a new fixturePaint the hallway bathroom{DONE!}
My List of Garden Projects For This Year I want to Accomplish
Currently I’m working on my bulb order from Van Engelen. I’m having a hard time deciding what kind of daffodils to get though. It’s a toss up between all white ones, or white with an orange or yellow center.
Also, the tomatoes have gone made. We are getting a colander full of cherry tomatoes about every two days now. Perhaps I planted too many. Ha!
Still left on the list:
Install a simple flower bed border in front of the house{Done}- Star a lasagna garden
- Install a boatload of birdhouses/feeders in the side yard {re-thinking this one}
- Transplant evergreen saplings to the side of property for a privacy border {fall project}
- Clean up and prune the area that faces the road {working on it}
Install a vegetable garden{Done}Install a sunflower patch{decided for a row along the side of the barn instead}- Plant 2,500 flower bulbs in the fall {Why 2,500? It seemed like a good number to start with}
Reach 10,000 Sales on Etsy {as of this morning I’ve made 8069 sales on Etsy}. Only 1931 to go!
My kitchen table is currently stacked with wool! Hopefully by the end of the day I’ll have it listed on Etsy. 🙂
Create 12 New Rug Hooking Patterns or Kits {5 down 7 to go}
While not a new design, I did hook another turkey rug for my fall listings update {hopefully next weekend}. It’s weird. Somedays I’m outside all day working in the yard, and other days I spend the whole day hooking. I love this time of year. Everyday is so different.

- Cape Cod 1829 New England Whale and Sailboat
- Nantucket Whale
- 1820 Flower Basket
- Bunny Love
- Old Mr. Squirrel

Discover 12 Made in Maine Products and Share Them on the Blog

Robin in WI says
Ah, I miss the sight and smell of line-dried sheets and clothes. Haven’t done that in 30 years due to pollen allergies and not wanting to wear/sleep on fallout from manufacturing, car exhaust, etc. In the countryside there’s still pollen and pesticide drift.
Diana says
I’ve been hanging my clothes out for years and I LOVE it! The only thing I put in the dryer are the towels, otherwise they come out like stiff cardboard, lol. (Part of that is because of soap residue, but 100% cotton just doesn’t dry very soft on a line – towels or clothing.) You can’t beat the smell of sheets and clothes that have been dried outside. That smell just can’t be bottled…
Gigi says
Lol. I kind of like the scratchy towels. I guess I grew up with that. More exfoliation. Haha
Annette says
What did you think about the movie “Cold Mountain” ?
Lucy the boat captain cracks me up.
Christy says
I have a portable “tripod” clothesline that I put on the deck in good weather and the spare bedroom during winter. We have an HOA that doesn’t allow permanent clotheslines but it says nothing about temporary items 😀 Prior to living here, there were no HOA restrictions at my house so everything was hung outside (no allergy issues here to deal with). Love saving money and being environmentally friendly.
Elle says
I’ve had 2 clotheslines strung 10″ down from the ceiling in my sewing room. I hang clothes year-round (outside doesn’t work in winter with freeze, ice, snow as you know). I love it!
Happy Sunday to you! 🙂
Caroline says
I like the idea of all white daffodils… white matches every thing.
Diana j says
….but will you be able to see the flowers in the snow?
Mavis Butterfield says
The daffodils didn’t flower until early May here this year. 🙂 I think we’ll be okay.

When I had too many cherry tomatoes, I discovered this awesome cherry tomato pasta sauce recipe that tastes super creamy and made with olive oil. When you harvest your own garlic and basil, its phenomenal.

Amy W. says
Stephanie, this recipe looks delicious! It reminds me of Martha Stewart’s One Pan Pasta (www.marthastewart.com/978784/one-pan-pasta), but hers saves a step by not boiling the pasta separately. Everything cooks together…in about 20 minutes!
Wynne says
My mom won’t hang out clothes (she’s midcoast Maine) because there’s some moth or caterpillar that can leave residue on the clothes that creates a serious rash? I wonder if that’s likely or just a rare possibility. Maybe check with a neighbor? Would love to hear back if hanging out wash works for you.
Julie says
I’ve been using one of those umbrella-style clotheslines for the last 27 years. I hang on a drying rack in the winter. I only occasionally use the dryer and that’s for dog hair removal on couch throws.
Amy says
I made the chicken enchiladas this past week, my kids loved them! Served them with yellow rice and refried beans. Thank you for the recipe.
Linda says
For the cost of that clothesline you could have almost bought a dryer. I use an old fashion line attached to the house and a tree and take it down when done. I also like one l g line so I can hang the contour and flat sheet flat on line without folding for it to fit. I live in Wisconsin and hang sheets out in winter on a sunny day,they dry just fine.
Veronica says
I love the orange centered white daffodils!
We line dry our clothes year round on 50′ of line I bought from Walmart for a buck. I string it between the deck rails. (North of Seattle)
When we are blessed with too many cherry tomatoes, I make tomato jam. Love it inside my grilled cheese sandwich, on meatloaf, in pasta salads, on brushetta-type finger foods, and on crackers with cheese.
Melissa says
Tomato jam is also delicious poured over chicken in the slow cooker. I call it “change your life chicken”, because when I realized I could do that, it changed my life because it made dinner so easy! We shred after it’s done and serve over rice.
Nancy says
I love sleeping on sheets that have been hung outside to dry but I had to choose between that and having bird feeders. I think you can figure out why. The bird feeders won.
Susan says
I just read this article in today’s Boston Globe and hard to share: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/08/15/metro/101-years-old-maine-lobsterwoman-still-works-water/?p1=HP_Feed_ContentQuery
Pam T says
The daffodils with a little color in the center, just what is needed in the spring after a winter of all white. So welcome!
Nancy D says
I’ve had a clothes line like that umbrella type one for several years and LOVED it. I’ve also had one that has four lines on one reel type bar that you can hook or retract to a stationary post. I like it also, but you have to walk a lot more and it takes more time than loading the umbrella type. I think it’s so peaceful to use clotheslines. When we lived in town when my kids were small, I had some great chats with my neighbors while I was loading or unloading my clothesline. Great smells and Wonderful memories!
Kayla says
You can dehydrate your cherry tomatoes and make more no-need bread. I cut my cherry tomatoes in half, place on a cookie sheet with parchment paper underneath. Then I put the cookie sheets in the car for a day or three. When it is 100 degrees outside it takes one day, but 80’s takes 2-3 days. Then store them however you like.
Betsy in MN says
I haven’t used a dryer for over 10 years. I have one, just never hooked it up (it’s gas). I used to use a clothes line, it’s in the back yard, but the birds like to sit in the trees above it and I get bird droppings on my clean clothes. Now I use clothes drying racks and can move them around to capture the breeze or sunshine. I use them in the house in the winter. I love air drying clothing. Our clothes do not wear out and it saves money!
